Prototyping in the Age of AI

Workspace with sketchbook and laptop

AI can generate a thousand layouts in seconds. But prototyping was never about output volume — it was about asking the right question at the right fidelity, then learning from what breaks.

Volume is not velocity. An AI that produces a thousand layouts has not prototyped anything — it has only deferred the decision to someone who must still evaluate each one.

The skill of prototyping is the skill of narrowing. What are we trying to learn? What fidelity is sufficient to learn it? Generative tooling does not answer these questions — it only makes them more urgent.

The designers who will thrive are the ones who get sharper at framing, not faster at producing.
